Daniel Lismore a London/Coventry based artist opened his new exhibit ‘ Be yourself everybody else is already taken’ in February 2022 which I had the pleasure to see in Coventry.

Working with Rafeal Gomes the exhibit Consisted  of thirty two sculptural ensembles these eccentric coture creations featured accessories and clothes from designers and celebrities like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen gifted to him and stuff from his own wardrobe.

Each sculpture started with foundational pieces at the core then exotic textiles and accessories on top normally featuring famous designers. Then on top of this he would feature trinkets, antiques and political statements on top about the LGBTQ+ movement and sustainability.

This collection gives a look into Daniel Lismoe as a person this is shown by having each sculpture wearing a mask of his face in makeup and every model having the same height as him.

He was inspired by royalty, British monarchy and the Terracotta Army in China. It wasn’t just history and people in power that inspired him but high fashion and cross-culture sustainability. However his main inspiration was himself and his own eccentric character that is represented in these looks.

My favourite part about his work is how he tries to show how self expression and freedom to be yourself is everything. It also links very well to sustainability and the need for sustainable passion repurposing old clothes and trinkets to create new spectacular peices.

This piece was one of my standout favourites from the collection and got these pictures from a book I purchased all about the exhibit and his work in more detail. This variety of different materials exudes colour, texture and global influence. Featuring hot pink ostrich feathers from an Alexander McQueen dress, an Afghan bridal headpiece, Maasai and Native American beaded accsesories, and an Andrew Logan brooch attached to the Sorapol couture dress embellished with more than 150,000 hand placed crystals in a stingray motif. The look is capped with a Somali basket lid nd completed with Renaissance- inspired pauldrons and ornamental dragonflies. I love this look so much as of the bold colours and it shows how much of a variety of items he uses some unconventional and hid vast collection of inspiration.
